Maiah is a wonderful dog. I have not had her very long, but especially during the first few weeks, when I had her, I kept saying to myself that’s so much like Pearl or that’s so much like Arch. These are her two parents. She seems to have a very acute sense of smell and be very curious to use her nose. She goes around sniffing everything and goes out of her way to go investigate something with her nose. She is very gentle with the animals and once even wanted to go in the pen with them just to hang out. She is very loving. About half of the time, she gives you a loving, longing look when you come outside and aren’t in the pen with her. The rest of the time she just looks so happy to see you and does her little, fairly short and sedate, doggie dance of joy. She’s not as high energy as some of her full blood sisters and Pearl’s pups on the whole are not as high energy as some other scotch collies. Archibald is calmer than Pearl, not very surprising since normally larger Scotch collies are calmer. She shows some slight herding instinct. I have not had much time to try her, but even just watching her, she seems to show willingness to move the animals. However, she doesn’t see any need to try and do it without permission. She has ball drive but funny enough, although she will compete with the other dogs over some things, she won’t compete with her mommy to take her ball from her. Pearl always grabs the ball before her. I have tried to get Maiah and Barbara, her half-sister, to chase other balls at the same time as Pearl but with no luck. With her great nose, I think she would be a good hunter. The people who had her were training her to shed hunt, but they said they could never get her to bring the horns back to them. As I understood, they didn’t spend an inordinate amount of time trying to train her. They had a very busy life. However, I’m not positively sure how much time they spent training her. The lady said, “ A little bit….” Maiah is clear/clear for CEA, and we are waiting for the results of a recent Embark panel. I am particularly wanting to know if she is recessive for MDR1 or not. I look forward to working her with the animals more. I’m 98% sure, from my small number of times out with her and the animals, and a day when we spent a while out there, that I could leave her out with the animals (including young babies) with no problem. As for her moving the animals, I’m not sure how good she will do in that she seems to have some organizational skills, as I call it, and joins in with the other collies when an animal is getting out, and they don’t think it is supposed to be out. Most of the time they’re right. A few times they’re mistaken and just didn’t realize the human opened the gate and it was on purpose. Normally, in this case, telling them this puts an end to the barking in about a minute. She picks up on some training instructions very quickly, but concerning staying in her corner with out something to keep her in it, that she can’t see through, and in not jumping up on things or sometimes me, she is a little bit of a slower learner. We’re also making moderate progress in only getting in your lap when we are requested to. I have a lot of very detailed instructions I am trying to teach Maiah, and I would say considering all of that she is doing pretty well. She’s a very smart dog like both her parents, and I’m sure if her small hint of stubbornness inherited from her dad doesn’t get in the way, she will learn all these instructions and do them well. I may update this epistle as I learn more about Maiah’s unique personality and qualifications.
