About the Old-Time Scotch Collie Pedigree Database

Starting in 1892 when The Fancier's Journal said "sooner or later (it will) have to be recognized that the show bench collie is absolutely distinct from his ancient prototype, and the formation of an old Scotch Collie Club will have to be seriously considered" there has been a small minority of collie owners who wanted to keep and breed the original collie as it existed before conformation breeding changed it into the dog know as the Rough Collie today. In 1912 the publication Country Life in America took up the cause and argued for the formation of an "Old-Fashioned Collie Club", this effort proved premature and in time fell apart. The numbers of these old fashioned Scotch Collie lovers were small and in most cases they were separated by hundreds of miles of distance and had no easy way to locate or contact one another, so slowly the twentieth century wore away at the numbers of these dogs as breeding mates grew harder and harder to locate and great dogs grew old and died. The “Farm Collie Movement” of the 1990s again drew attention to the issue and located a handful of the old type collies in rural America, but this effort too grew tired in the new millennium and many of these dogs that had started to be bred and distributed began to grow old and die while others were sucked into the English Shepherd breed, a related breed to be sure, but not the same as the old Scotch Collie. It seemed clear that what was needed most was what had been first suggested in 1892, an overarching organization to lead the way in promoting and proliferating the old fashioned Scotch Collie. Thus the Old-Time Scotch Collie Association was formed in 2010 with the first goal of creating a way to record and track pedigrees.

Building on the grassroots nature of the Scotch Collie movement and the independent character of Scotch Collie breeders, the Old-Time Scotch Collie Pedigree Database is a completely original idea in tracking pedigrees. This is the most open, accessible and transparent registry in the history of dog breeding, anyone can view the dogs herein and see just what we are registering, and anyone can create a user account and add dogs to the database. Our data is 100% user generated, a dog's owner and breeder always have access to edit and update a dog's information. An open, user generated, publicly accessible pedigree database had never been attempted before, and as of this writing, eight years in, we can say it is has been a huge success that continues to grow and improve daily.

What dogs can be added?

This pedigree database is available for any farm collie type dog whether or not they meet the Old-Time Scotch Collie breed standard. Over the years many farm collie dogs have been bred with few if any breeding records kept, so that as the years go by and breeders get old and pass away, some dogs pedigrees may be unclear. We submit that our free, open pedigree database is a great place for farm collie breeders to maintain their records whether or not they want to pursue OTSC registration. To add a dog simply create a user account and then go to Functions > Add a dog, to begin adding your dog, breeders and owners have full access to edit a dog at all times.

Tools for breeders

If you are a potential breeder you may want to try our a test breeding, which allows you to put together a pedigree from a hypothetical cross of two dogs from our database, this will give you a chance to see and analyze the potential puppy's pedigree before you make a breeding decision. The stud finder can help you locate a potential mate by listing living, intact dogs of a particular sex and listing their city and state.

Adding a litter of puppies

If both parents of a breeding have full OTSC registration and you own the female then you can add the whole litter and apply for puppy registration in one operation, just go to Functions > Enter a whole litter. There you will need to select the OTSC registered female that you own then enter the male that is the sire of this litter and enter the birthday, after you select the number of puppies in the litter the form will automatically populate with the correct number of spaces for all your pups. Enter each puppies name, sex and color, then submit the form, your pups will all be automatically entered into the database they will be submitted for OTSC puppy registration with will also qualify them to be advertised on the OTSCA website, Facebook page and email list.

If your litter does not qualify for OTSC registration then add the first puppy the way you would add any new dog to the database, then once you have entered the relevant in formation like name, date of birth, breeder, sire and dam, save the changes and then click the edit dog link but this time click the "Clone Dog" link at the top of the page, this will create a new dog that has the same breeder, birthdate, sire and dam as the first, then all you need to do is update the information specific to this dog like color and name. You will need to keep cloning dogs until you have entered the number of dogs that are in the litter.

Applying for OTSC registration

Any dog over one year of age may be submitted for full OTSC registration, you will need to enter the dog in to the database first and make sure you have added at least three photos showing your dog from the front and both sides, make sure you have entered details about your dog's temperament, you will also need to have your vet fill out the health certification form and have it scanned into your computer so that it can be uploaded when the registration application is submitted. All registration applications will go before the OTSCA registration committee where the dog will be carefully compared against the OTSC breed standard. Once your dog's Old-Time Scotch Collie registration is approved you can print our beautiful registration papers right from the edit dog screen in the pedigree database.
