Monie was not quite 8 years old when she passed away unexpectedly. An ultrasound showed an abnormal mass and fluid near her liver. The mass had ruptured and she was bleeding out. I made the decision to spare her a major surgery with no guarantee of being life-saving, and we let her go. She had showed no previous signs of discomfort. The day before, she ran and played with her daughters, guarded the farm, ate horse poo, had a good dinner, and slept in her favorite spot beside my bed. Thankfully, her suffering was brief. She guarded the farm vigilantly, kept everyone in line, and saved my flock from coyotes, eagles, raccoons, and a bobcat. She was best friends with the barn cats. She was a most excellent road trip buddy. She gave me two lovely litters of beautiful puppies. She loved to sit beside me on the couch and get a hug, and she always took my spot in bed when I got up to use the toilet, knowing that when I crawled back in, she would get kissed and snuggled. Her favorite thing was to go on car rides and visit the feed store or hardware store, especially the ones that gave out goodies. She had a pup cup at Starbucks once, and after that, she expected all drive-throughs to pay up. If we were on a long road trip, she expected her share of my fries and her own order of chicken nuggets. She got first dibs on any bowls that needed licking. She loved her little stuffed squirrel and her “duck foot” — the remnants of a giant yellow stuffed duck that had been a toy for one of her litters. She loved chasing the lure on the end of a longe whip — not so much for the chase, but for the chance to JUMP. She loved to jump for her toys. She could jump about four feet straight up, and would jump on command. She was my best girl.

Working Description: Monie's job is to manage the farm. She hunts rats and keeps watch over the yard and the free range chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. If she hears a disturbance in the flock, she is off like a shot to make sure they are alright. If the birds are fighting, she puts a stop to it and then leaves them alone. She is an excellent alert dog who takes patrolling the perimeter of my small farm very seriously. She has saved the lives of my flock countless times by treeing raccoons and chasing off coyotes and bald eagles. She barks when she needs to, but she also has an off switch. She has exhibited some brilliant herding potential with ducks and sheep. Her working style is upright and calm, with nice balance and a great call off. She hasn't had much practice due to my own busy schedule, but the instinct is there. She is an excellent road trip companion, is great with visitors, and reliable around children. She is eager to please, easy to train, and a general all-around excellent family dog in addition to her duties as farm guardian.
