Description

female
Sable & White

Health

CEA carrier

Lou excels at being a family dog. She is a nana dog to my young boys and often escorts them and their friends on rompings around the farm. She has a great off-switch; content to be still and lay at your feet, but is the first out the door when there is work to be done. She has a “teflon” coat - if she gets dirty, it takes no time for all the filth to just magically disappear! She will bite any burrs she acquires around the farm out of her fur all by herself. She does not shed much on a daily basis, but has blown her coat twice a year. Lastly, this girl has the endurance of a mule. It is not abnormal for her to run 6 miles in a day, without showing any sign of being tired. That said, she is not hyper or destructive without exercise either. She is most content to be active, as she loves to work, but is also content being confined, especially with her people.

Working

Lou would rather work than eat a meal! This girl is THE cowgirl on our farm. With cows, she herds on heels with barking and snapping. She will naturally put cows back in a fence when out or gather strays back to the herd. She holds cows at gates or off hay bales while we unroll them. There are so many times when she just reads my mind and gets to the work before I can even command her. She uses her big girl voice on mamas and larger steers/bulls, but is gentle with yearlings and calves. She has been known to cross many acres of pasture when she sees cows out of the hot wire. Lou also excels at being a chicken dog. She understands to leave free range birds alone, but if there is a chicken or chick outside of a coop, she is quick to chase it down and catch it without harm - including catching baby chicks in her mouth and bringing them to us unharmed. Lou is always on alert, both on the ground and in the sky. Any bird crow-sized or larger, she will bark and chase out of the pasture. She has been known to even know birds of prey are on the ground on the other side of a ridge without me even seeing it - off she dashes over the ridge and birds fly. Amazing. She will jump off our side-by-side moving at 30 mph to chase down predators. While we work on the farm without a job for her to do, she makes her own work by hunting in varmint holes in the field or hunting the fence lines. She also loves to chase and tree squirrels and has caught and killed several. Lou also found a blood trail of a deer I shot 50 yards from where I shot it, and tracked it without faltering to where the deer was lying half a mile away. Lou has had no formal training whatsoever - all done on instinct.
