Gretel has strong natural instincts for herding and varmint control. She patrols the property for deer and drives them away. She recognizes animals that don’t belong and guards those that do. She has killed groundhogs, possums, and moles. She patrols the sky for hawks and buzzards and will run beneath them to drive them away. She is quiet and trustworthy around our chickens. She has a strong herding instinct, is loose-eyed with natural gathering instinct. Although she still has more commands to learn, she has required very little training to be useful with our flock. As a pup, she kept a keen eye on our other dogs when they were herding and came into her first lesson already working like a much more experienced dog. When not working, Gretel is a relaxed family dog. She’s highly intelligent, learns very quickly, and has a fun personality. She tries hard to please and is motivated by praise and approval. She likes to cuddle with my daughter in the house at night and is totally trustworthy with her. With strangers, she is quite reserved. She is on high alert when strangers visit our home, but relaxes as soon as I tell her the visitor is ok. She takes her cue from our behavior and that of our other dogs. She makes a lot of eye contact with us and picks up on subtle cues. Once introduced, she becomes calm and polite, though still reserved unless it is someone she and our family know. In public places, she is neither shy nor aggressive. She accepts attention from strangers politely but prefers to stay focused on her owners
