Jocko is an Ovelheiro Gaucho imported from Brazil in May 2016. He is from Canil Santa Terezinha, owned by Diego Paz. The OGs were bred to herd cattle. Both his parents are strong working dogs on Diego's ranch. We do not have cattle, but his instinct to herd is very strong. He is a very sweet and sensitive dog at home.

He's got the most calm temperament of all my dogs. I have two dog-hating cats who liked him right away. He recognizes that they are part of the family and is very cool with them, but does bark at the neighbor's cat when she gets too close to the fence. He's also very calm with visitors (no jumping), yet is friendly when people want to talk to him and pet him. He's very sweet and when I'm laying down at night on the sofa, he checks up on me regularly. He comes over, sniffs at me a bit, then when he gets a pat on the head he either lays on the floor next to me or in front.
He is very compliant and is learning quickly. We're doing basic obedience right now and he's already got sit, heal and come. As a matter of fact, I would say he's got the long come down as well, since he's the first one to start running back when I call them in. He watches my back gate mostly and sleeps by that back door as well, so is the first to alert me when he hears something awry back there. He's definitely part of keeping vermin out of the yard. He's keen on the rabbits and possums and barks at the ones in my neighbor's yard. Those types of animals don't dare come into the fenced part of my property with him (to be fair, all three of them) there. He checks up on the chicken coup a lot and I see him laying there in front of it (facing outwards) when he's having a lie down.
I haven't tested his herding instincts yet as there's nothing to herd here at my place. I have to imagine he's got the instinct because he comes from a long line of active herding dogs. The only thing I can tell you is when the cat leaves the house, Jocko is the one who keeps him from leaving the porch and lays between the cat and the yard. I've seen him also nudge the cat when I call them in. I guess that's herding. LOL it's herding cats.
